International court may investigate Colombian rebels’ backers

18 August 08

From the IHT

The International Criminal Court in the Hague may open an investigation into support networks for Colombia’s main rebel group, the court’s prosecutor said Friday, a move that would increase scrutiny of sympathizers in Latin America and Europe.

The prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, said he was planning to travel to Bogotá on Aug. 25 to meet with the judicial authorities and officials in President Álvaro Uribe’s government to determine whether the court should open a formal investigation. The preliminary inquiry comes amid growing pressure on alleged supporters outside Colombia of the rebels, who call themselves the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
